As Far As I Can Tell

Last Friday I went to Nayts opening reception at The Space. Hes created a series of small red cubes, mounted on the wall with backlit holes in the front to look into them through. Inside are drawings on red ink. The next two photos are the viewers perspective looking in, but a lot is lost not being able to see the boxes themselves. Itll be up all month, go check it out.

Monday I went to Ann Arbor to visit my brother and see a lecture by William McDonough, an architect who works in eco-friendly ways. Hes actually expanded into other products through his partnership with a Greenpeace activist turned chemist. He makes buildings that generate more energy than they use; cool themselves, etc. - all under budget. He has good ideas, founded in reality, which is refreshing.

My notes from the lecture (which are always a little off from the actual subject matter Im hearing about) are:

  • What does it meant to be not leaving? What is does it mean to be native? How do you approach things differently if you have that mindset?
  • Create retroactive design guideline for things you take for granted. I’d expand that to remembering to create design guidelines before starting anything.
  • Read silent spring. Ive been hearing references to this book for a while, has anyone read this?
  • Commercial buildings designed to convert into living spaces (he does this; really interesting idea)
  • How do you find true south?

So Ive finally finished the Moped Army website. Whew, now on to other things. Also in Moped Army news, the belt buckles have arrived. Hell yeah.

Ive been watching a lot of cable news networks lately. I think this comes from wanting to have something to listen to but not always wanting music. Its also something I do in the morning to wake myself up. One thing Ive noticed is that you only really need to check in on the news about once every two days. Anything more than that and youre just going to hear the same stories and theories repeated over and over again. Its kind of maddening actually.

Music Ive been listening to:

Mates Of State
The Mercury Program
The Gentle Waves
Kind of Like Spitting
Les Savy Fav
Jim ORourke

Im going to be in Chicago this weekend. I hope I can find time to get to a record store. Kalamazoo is dying from record store thirst.
